There's a difference between using AI to do a task faster and using AI so you don't have to think through the task at all. It feels identical in the moment. The research suggests it isn't.

THE STUDY

Recent research on students using AI tools for coursework found a consistent pattern: students who let AI generate the full answer and lightly edited it performed worse on later, unassisted assessments of the same material than students who used AI more as a check on their own reasoning. The tool wasn't the problem. How it was used was.

The gap wasn't really about grades either, it was about whether the student could still do the task without the tool a week later.

WHAT "DOING THE THINKING" ACTUALLY MEANS

Thinking through a problem isn't just arriving at a correct answer. It's the struggle of trying an approach, hitting a wall, and figuring out why it didn't work. That friction is uncomfortable, and it's also where the actual learning happens. When AI skips straight to a polished answer, it quietly removes the exact part of the process that would have built the skill.

You get the output. You don't get the practice.

THE SKILL YOU DON'T NOTICE YOU'RE LOSING

The dangerous part is that outsourcing your thinking doesn't feel like losing a skill in the moment, it feels like being more efficient. You don't notice the gap until you're in a situation without the tool, an exam, an interview, a conversation, and you reach for judgment you didn't actually build.

Your own judgment, the ability to evaluate whether something is right, spot what's missing, and know when an answer doesn't sit right, is the part AI can't do for you even when it's doing everything else.

USING AI WITHOUT OUTSOURCING YOUR JUDGMENT

The students in the research who benefited most used AI after attempting the problem themselves, not before. They'd draft an answer, then use AI to stress-test it, find gaps, or suggest a angle they hadn't considered. That order matters enormously: struggle first, assist second. It keeps the thinking yours while still getting the speed benefit of the tool.

A SIMPLE RULE

If you can't explain, in your own words, why the AI's answer is right, you haven't actually learned anything, you've just retyped something. Before you accept an answer, ask yourself if you could reconstruct the reasoning without it. If not, that's the sign to slow down, not speed up.
